About the DA

Jaeson Smith was elected District Attorney for the Tallapoosa Circuit in 2024. In his capacity, DA Smith oversees the prosecution of over 2,500 felony and misdemeanor case referred for prosecution each year. D.A. Smith works hand in hand with over 25 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies which seek assistance in the prosecution of cases. He has assembled one of the most experienced prosecution teams in the State of Georgia, with his Assistant District Attorneys averaging over 22 years in the courtroom.

Prior to being elected District Attorney, he served 12 years as an Assistant District Attorney, three of which as the Tallapoosa Circuit’s Chief Assistant D.A. During his tenure as Assistant District Attorney, he obtained the circuit’s first ever Street Gang Terrorism conviction. He continues to assist local officers in battling local street gangs head on.

D.A. Smith has previously served as the Solicitor for the cities of Bremen, Buchanan and Tallapoosa.  He also served as the Tallapoosa Circuit’s Juvenile Court Prosecutor for three years. He maintains an active role in and is a strong proponent of the Tallapoosa Circuit’s Accountability Courts. He is a strong advocate for better mental health treatment in the West Georgia territories.

In 2010, D.A. Smith helped create the 5th Grade Mock Trial Field Trip.  Several times a year, hundreds of 5th graders from across the circuit’s elementary schools come to the courthouse and D.A. Smith, with the help of student attorneys and jurors, put a teacher on trial for the heinous crime of giving too much homework. It is an exercise in our court system and real-life lesson on the Bill of Rights.  Since its inception, thousands of students have had the opportunity to participate in the Mock Trial Field Trip.
